  • Welcome to the American FactFinder Topic Search Tutorial.
  • In this tutorial, we will demonstrate how to search for data by pre-defined topics.
  • After viewing the Topic Search Tutorial, you will be able to perform a basic search for data using topics and keywords.
  • To begin, navigate to the American FactFinder main page at factfinder2.census.gov.
  • In this tutorial, let's use pre-defined topics to search for data.
  • For this demonstration, expand the Topics section on the American FactFinder Main Page.
  • You can search by a variety of familiar topics including:
    • People,
    • Housing,
    • Business and Industry,
    • Program and
    • Dataset.
  • Next, select a search topic and expand the Age Group section.
  • Click on Children.
  • Notice each of the following:
    • Your Selections was updated with the selected topic.
    • The topic categories are updated each time you make a selection.
    • The number in parenthesis indicates the number of corresponding products for that search topic.
  • The search results will be refined each time an item is added or removed from Your Selections.
  • You can use topic search to select more than one topic to refine your search results.
  • For this tutorial, expand the Dataset section.
  • Click on 2008 ACS 3-year estimates.
  • Notice each of the following:
    • Your Selections is updated with the selected topic.
    • The topic categories also are updated.
    • The search results are refined to include only those products with "Children" contained in the "2008 ACS 3-year estimates".
  • You can easily add or remove items from Your Selections at any point during your search.
  • Click the Remove button to remove the "2008 ACS 3-year estimates" search criteria.
  • American FactFinder removes this item from Your Selections, updates the topic categories, and refreshes the search results.
  • Click Main to return to the American FactFinder Main Page.
  • This concludes the Topic Search tutorial.
