- Welcome to the American FactFinder Modify a Table Tutorial.
- In this Tutorial, we will demonstrate how to:
- Show and hide rows of a table;
- Collapse and expand data categories;
- Rearrange columns and rows; and
- Sort rows in ascending and descending order.
- After viewing this tutorial, you will be able to perform basic modifications to change the display of a table in American FactFinder.
- To begin, navigate to the American FactFinder main page at factfinder2.census.gov.
- Click the Search button to display the search results page.
- Select the table – "ACS Demographic and Housing Estimates 2008" from the Search Results.
- The selected table displays.
- Click Modify Table.
- Notice the following:
- A set of Table Tools displays that allow you to:
- Reset the table;
- Show hidden rows of the table; or
- Transpose the rows and columns of the table.
- It is important to understand that the tools displayed in the table are dependent upon the way the information is organized in the table you are viewing.
- Below the table tools, a legend displays with a description of the modifications that can be applied to a table and
- The table is updated with only those tools that are applicable to this table.
- Let's hide some columns in the table.
- Click the check boxes at the top of the 'Margin of Error' columns.
- Notice the following:
- The table view is updated with the 'Margin of Error' columns hidden.
- A note has been added to the top of the table indicating that the table has been modified from its original display.
- To restore the 'Margin of Error' columns, click on the 'Show Hidden Rows/Columns' button.
- Now, let's collapse a data category in the table.
- Click the Collapse button next to 'Total Population'.
- The display of the 'Total Population' category is collapsed in the table.
- You can easily expand the 'Total Population' category by clicking on the 'Expand' button.
- Next, let's rearrange the rows in the table.
- This feature enables you to:
- Move rows up and down in the table and
- Move columns to the right and left.
- Click on the 'Move up' button next to the 'Black or African American' row in the table.
- The row 'Black or African American' is moved above the row 'White' in the table.
- Once you have finished modifying the view of the table, you can select the 'Hide Table Tools' button to print, bookmark or download the modified view of the table.
- At any point during your table modifications, you can reset the table to the original view.
- To reset the table, click on "Reset Table".
- The original table view is restored.
- To demonstrate sorting functionality, let's look at a different table.
- Click "Back to Search" to select other tables or geographies.
- Type "Economy Wide" in the 'Search within Results' box.
- The search results are updated.
- Select the table "Geographic Area Series: Economy-Wide Key Statistics: 2002."
- Click "Modify Table" to display the table tools.
- Let's select a column to sort.
- Click on the 'Sort Ascending' button in the "Number of Establishments" column.
- The table view is sorted in ascending order by number of establishments.
- The 'Sort Ascending' button is highlighted to show that you are currently sorting the table by the number of establishments.
- To remove the sort, click again on the 'Sort Ascending' button.

- Rearrange columns; and
- Sort in ascending and descending order.
