Guided Search - Selecting Geographies

Guided Search helps you search for Census data for one or more geographic areas of the United States.

Guided Search offers two ways to specify the geographic area you want. First, if the area is a state, county, city, town or ZIP code, you can type the area name or ZIP code into the text field near the top of the Geographies page. Second, you can locate the area by specifying its geographic type (such as county, place, or congressional district), and then choose from a list of areas of that type.

When you select a geography, American FactFinder adds it to Your Selections as one of your search criteria. FactFinder then searches for data products that match all of the criteria shown in Your Selections, and according to the Guided Search option you have chosen. The total number of data products found is shown at the bottom of Your Selections.

If you want to remove a geography from Your Selections, click the blue “X” next to the one you want to remove.

To specify more than one geography, repeat one of the options described above.

Guided Search is only available for the most commonly requested geographies. If you cannot locate the geography you are looking for, try using Advanced Search, which contains all Census geographies available in AFF.

Selecting a Geography by Name

If you know the name of the state, county, city or town you are looking for, or you know the ZIP code you want, type it into the entry field near the top of the screen.

As you type, FactFinder will show you areas with the same or similar name as the one you are typing. You can choose one of the suggested names, or continue to type until the one you want appears, and then click GO.

If you do not choose one of the suggested area names, or FactFinder finds more than one area matching the name you typed in, FactFinder displays a popup window where you can pick the exact area you want.

If you do not find the area you want listed in the popup window, close the window and type more of the name or a more precise name into the entry field.

When you select an area, FactFinder adds it to Your Selections as one of your search criteria. FactFinder then searches for data products that match all of the criteria shown in Your Selections, and according to the Guided Search option you have chosen. The total number of data products found is shown at the bottom of Your Selections.

If you want to remove an area from Your Selections, click the blue “X” next to the one you want to remove.

If you want to add another geographic area to your search, you can type its name into the geography entry field as described above

Selecting a Geography by Type

You can locate the geographic area you want by specifying its type, and then selecting it from a list of areas of that type. Examples of geographic types include states, counties, and places.

To view a list of available geographic types, click on the “Select a geographic type” box.

Some of the types in the list may appear grayed-out. This is because they are not available due either to the kind of Guided Search you are performing (e.g., people, housing, or business and industry) or the criteria you have selected on other steps (shown in Your Selections). In addition, Guided Search contains the most commonly requested geographic types to perform its search. If you cannot locate the geographic type you are looking for, try starting a new search using Advanced Search, which uses a database of all geographic types available in AFF.

Choose one of the available geographic types to continue.

Depending upon the geographic type you select, Guided Search may prompt you to select one or more intermediate geographies of a related type to help identify the area in which you are interested. For example, if you select the County geographic type, Guided Search will prompt you to identify the state that the county is in, and then provide a list of counties in that state.

The total number of data products found is shown at the bottom of Your Selections.

If you want to remove an area from Your Selections, click the blue “X” next to the one you want to remove.

If you want to add an area of another geographic type, repeat the steps described above.
