Search Using Race and Ethnic Groups

Advanced Search provides two alternative approaches to selection of Population Groups. The best approach for you to use depends on the Population Groups you are interested in, and the kind of information you want to know about them.

The first approach, available on the “Basic Groups” tab, provides access to general information about basic race groups and ancestries. General information includes basic profile data, such as population counts, household information, and employment data.

Note: in previous versions of American FactFinder, the basic race groups were available as part of the “Topics” step. They have been moved to this step to consolidate selection of Population Groups in one step.

The second approach, available on the “Detailed Groups” tab, provides access to more Population Groups, and more detailed information about those groups, than are available on the “Basic Groups” tab. More Race and Ethnic groups are available, and Tribes, Ancestry Groups and Countries of Birth, which are not available on the “Basic Groups” tab, are available by this approach.

These two tabs work independently of each other, which means making a selection on one of the tabs does not have any effect on the other tab.

Search for Basic Groups

To search for information about a basic group, select one of the entries listed on the “Basic Groups” tab. (You can select more than one group if you want.) AFF will add your choice to your search criteria, which are shown in the “Your Selections” box.

The data products available when you pick one of these entries will contain general information about your selected group (and possibly other groups). General information includes basic profile data, such as population counts, household information, and employment data.

If you want a basic count of ancestry groups, use the “Basic Groups” tab; if you want characteristics about an ancestry, chose one from the “Detailed Groups” tab.

Note: in previous versions of American FactFinder, the basic race groups were available as part of the “Topics” step. They have been moved to this step to consolidate selection of Population Groups in one step.

Search for Detailed Groups

To search a more complete list of over 2,500 race and ethnic groups, tribes, ancestries, and countries of origin defined by the Census Bureau, use the “Detailed Groups” tab. This tab provides access to more Population Groups, and more detailed information about those groups, than is available in the “Basic Groups” tab.

Searching for detailed race groups will limit your table results primarily to tables contained in the following datasets:

     2010 Census Summary File 2 (SF2 100% Data)

2010 Census American Indian and Alaska Native SF (Summary File)

2010 American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year Selected Population Tables

2010 American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year American Indian and Alaska Native Tables

     Census 2000 Summary File 2 (SF2 100% Data)

Census 2000 Summary File 4 (SF4 Sample Data)

Census 2000 American Indian and Alaska Native SF

Selected Population Profile (Table S0201) from the American Community Survey for

§      ACS 1-Year Estimates from 2005 to the present; and the

§      ACS 3-Year Estimates from 2007 to the present

§      Note that the S0201 table is subject to population threshold limitations for the population group selected for the geography selected, so data will not be available for all groups for all geographic areas.

Search for a Race and Ethnic Group by Name

If you know the name or Census Bureau-designated code of the group you are looking for, you can type it into the text box near the top of the screen.

As you type, AFF will provide a short list of races, ethnicities, tribes, ancestries, and countries of birth that contain what you type. If one of the suggested names is the group you want you can select it and then click the “GO” button.

When you click the “GO” button, AFF adds the text you have typed to the “Your Race and Ethnic Group Filters” box, which keeps track of your currently selected filters, and then refreshes the list of groups available for selection in the “Race and Ethnic Groups Results” list so that it contains only those groups that contain the text you have provided.

You can add more than one name if you want, and can remove a name from your filters by clicking on the blue “X” next to the name.

When you find the group you want in the “Race and Ethnic Groups Results” you can click on its name to add it to your search criteria (which is visible in “Your Selections”). If you want to pick more than one group to add to your search criteria, you can select the check boxes to the left of the group names you want, then select the “Add” button.

Search for a Race and Ethnic Group by Type

Browse the lists of available race and ethnic groups, tribes, ancestries, and countries of origin by selecting one of the categories shown in the “Race/Ethnic Group Filter Options” box.

See Race and Ethnic Group Filters for more information about using these filters.

See the glossary for more information about Race, Hispanic or Latino origin, Place of Birth, and Ancestry.

AFF adds the category you select to the “Your Race and Ethnic Group Filters” box, which keeps track of your currently selected filters, and then refreshes the list of groups available for selection in the “Race and Ethnic Groups Results” list so that it contains only those groups that are contained in the category you selected. To remove the selected category click the blue “X” next to it.

You can reorder the list of available groups in the “Race and Ethnic Group Results” by clicking on the column labels.

When you find the group you want in the “Race and Ethnic Groups Results” you can click on its name to add it to your search criteria (which is visible in “Your Selections”). If you want to pick more than one group to add to your search criteria, you can select the check boxes to the left of the group names you want, and then select the “Add” button.

To remove a group from Your Selections, click the blue “X” next to the one you want to remove.

When you want to select several closely related groups, Advanced Search makes their selection easer by providing predefined collections of groups. You can distinguish between regular groups and collections by their name – collections begin with the words “All available…” Examples of collections include “All available Hopi tribes”, “All available ancestries”, and “All available Hispanic Origin”.

An advantage to using group collections is if the information you are looking for is available for only one or a few of the groups in the collection, then tables containing data for those groups will appear in your search results. If instead you individually selected each group, then only tables that contained data for all of the selected groups would appear in your search results.

You can control whether group collections appear in the Race and Ethnic Groups Results with the three radio buttons that are in the “Include in results” box.

By default the “All population groups” button is selected, which means individual groups and group collections will both appear in the “Race and Ethnic Groups Results”.

If you pick the “Individual population groups” button, all group collections will be removed from the “Race and Ethnic Groups Results”.

If you pick the “Collections of population groups” button, only group collections will appear in the “Race and Ethnic Groups Results”.
