Search Using Industry Codes

In Advanced Search, you can search for data using industry codes by entering an industry name or number in the industry code search box or by selecting industry code filters from industry code filter groups. Enter an industry name or number in the industry code search box and a drop-down list of possible search terms displays. Industry code filter options let you refine the list of industry codes you can choose from based on criteria such as code type, industry sector, or products and services. Industry code filter options are contained within the filter groups.

Search for an Industry Code by Name

To search for an industry code by name: 

1.    Click the industry codes button on the left to open the industry code search.

2.    Enter an industry name or code into the industry code search box. As you type the industry name or number, a drop-down list displays under the search box listing a few possible matching industry codes. You can select an item from the drop-down list, or continue with your entry.

Note: You can search for industry codes to add to Your Selections by entering the first three or more characters of the Industry Code followed by an asterisk (*). This will return industry codes beginning with these characters in the industry code search results.

3.    Click GO.

The industry name or code you entered appears under your industry code filters, and the results pane of the industry code search is updated.

4.    Add industry codes from the results pane to Your Selections:

     Click the hyperlinked industry name, or

     Check one or more checkboxes next to the industry code filters and click the add button.

5.    Close the industry code search:

     Click the industry codes button again, or

     Click the close images\ebx_-1040507270.gif button in the upper-right corner.

 

The data search results are updated to show only the data matching the filters in Your Selections.

To search for additional unrelated industry code filters, clear your industry code filters by clicking the clear all filters link images\ebx_415040004.gifor by clicking the individual remove filter buttons images\ebx_-1408035215.gif. For example, after selecting the code type filter “Commodity”, a text search for Mining won’t returnany Industry Code results. The following message will displayin the industry codes results pane:

"No industry codes were found that match the combination of items in 'Your Industry Code Filters' and 'Your Selections'. Try removing items from 'Your Industry Code Filters' or from 'Your Selections' to continue searching."

Again, you will need to remove the filters from your industry code filters and then retry your search for Mining.

 

 

Search for an Industry Code by Filter

Search for industry codes using the filters in the industry code filter options pane. Navigate filters by expanding and collapsing the filter groups and subgroups. Click on a filter to add it to your industry code filter options, and the industry code results pane will be updated to show industry codes that match the filters you’ve selected.

Filters that you can use to find industry codes include:

     Code Type

     Industry Level

     Industry Sector

To search for an industry code using filters:

1.    Click industry codes button on the left to open the industry code search

2.    Click the expand images\ebx_-648957332.gifand collapse images\ebx_117775544.gifbuttons in the industry codes filter options pane to expand and collapse filter groups.

3.    Click an industry code filter to add it to your industry code filters.

The filter you selected is added to your industry code filters, and the industry code results pane of the industry code search is updated. You can add additional filters from the industry code filter groups or enter search terms in the industry code search box to refine your search.

4.    Add industry codes from the results pane to Your Selections by:

     Click the hyperlinked industry code name, or

     Check one or more checkboxes next to the industry code filters and click the add button.

5.    Close the industry code search:

     Click the industry codes button again, or

     Click the close images\ebx_-1040507270.gif button in the upper-right corner.

 

The data search results are updated to show data matching the filters in Your Selections

To search for additional unrelated industry code filters, clear your industry code filters by clicking the clear all filters button, images\ebx_415040004.gifor by clicking the individual remove filter buttons images\ebx_-1408035215.gif. For example, after selecting filters for the Steel Industry a text search for Agriculture won’t return any results for Agriculture. You will need to remove the filters from your industry code filters and then retry your search for Agriculture.

 

Include in Results Selector

American FactFinder uses predefined groups of industry codes to make it easier to select commonly requested groups of codes such as “All Sectors” or “All codes within Sector 21: Mining”.

Use the radio buttons under include in results to display all industry codes, only individual industry codes, or only predefined groups of industry codes in the industry codes results pane.

 

Error Messages

You may encounter the following error message while searching using industry codes:

 

"No industry codes were found that match the combination of items in 'Your Industry Code Filters' and 'Your Selections'. Try removing items from 'Your Industry Code Filters' or from 'Your Selections' to continue searching."

American FactFinder could not find matching industry codes based on the search term(s) you entered. Modify your industry code filters and try again.
